Gold Cup Winner 2025

Winner: Inothewayurthinkin

Betting Odds: 15/2

Trainer: Gavin Cromwell

Owner: J.P.McManus

Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1). A description of good-to-soft going and win prize money of £364,313.57. A winning time of 6m 40.00 (fast by 6.00s). A much anticipated race, mainly for the hope Galopin Des Champs, the 8/13f, could make it three consecutive wins after successes in 2023 & 2024, respectively. Could he emulate the greats such as: Cottage Rake, Arkle, Best Mate and Golden Miller?

Leading up to the race, Inothewayurthinkin and Galopin Des Champs met in the Irish Gold Cup (3m 1/2f), which saw Mullins’ charge win by 6-lengths at odds of 1/2f. Gavin Cornwell’s seven-year-old finished 4th running on well at odds of 16/1, beaten 7 ¼ lengths.

Would the extra Cheltenham yardage (3m 2 1/2f) be a deciding factor for these two prominent Irish raiders?

Inothewayurthinkin, a seven-year-old bay gelding, sired by Walk In The Park out of an eight times winning mare, Sway, in the ownership of McManus. A lightly raced gelding, with 14 runs and 4 wins.

An improving, progressive type.

He had improved all season and better the further he went. The big race would be a challenge but one of great anticipation.

14th March 2023 –

4:00 Cheltenham – Boodles Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1)

A relatively small field of 9 runners.

The betting suggested there were four major contenders: Galopin Des Champs 8/13, Banbridge 13/2, Inothewayurthinkin 15/2 and Monty’s Star 8/1.

Galopin Des Champs raced more prominently as did Inothewayurthinking who was far from fluent at the first. Similar to the previous year, Townend’s mount wasn’t fluent at the 7th. Ahoy Senor, led, as he did in the 2024 race, but fell at the 15th signficantly hampering the favourite, Corbett’s Cross, Monty’s Star and Gentlemansgame, who was left in the lead. The grey was hard pressed to hold his position at the 3-furlong pole, while Galopin Des Chaps cruised up on the bridle looking a very strong contender. However, the complexion of the race changed two out. Inothewayurthinkin, who had looked slightly outpace by the favourite, made a strong challenge heading to the last. The two horses went stride for stride, but Mark Welsh pressed on with a fine jump at the last while a tiring Galopin Des Champs was passed with some verve. Inothewayurthinkin lengthened, going clear in the final furlong, as Welsh thrust his fist in the air victorious, passing the winning post some 6-lengths ahead. The two-times winner finished a gallant second some 12-lengths in front of the tiring Gentlemansgame.

Quote: ‘I didn’t think we were travelling particularly well and we were flat out. He jumped well the whole way round. I knew they went good and hard and that was going to play to our strengths as he stays really well. He turned in and jumped the last and galloped out to the line. It was fantastic. He is just an improving horse. He has improved all season.’

Sadly, Corbett’s Cross was fatally injured when falling two out.
